Frequently asked questions

What is the ideal coffee-to-water ratio?

For filter, a common range is 1:10 to 1:18 (one gram of coffee to 10 to 18 grams of water). Adjust for the body and intensity you want. Nothing stops you from using different values. Always let your palate guide you!

Is there an ideal coffee recipe?

There is no ideal recipe. A recipe is a step-by-step guide that, when followed, can bring consistency between extractions, but it does not guarantee sensory quality: the water, the equipment and the beans significantly influence the final result in the cup.

Which variables affect coffee extraction?

The main ones are the coffee-to-water ratio, grind size, temperature, contact time, agitation, water quality and bean freshness. Changing any one of them already changes the result in the cup.

What is the ideal water temperature for coffee?

There is no single temperature. The 90 °C to 96 °C range is the most commonly used, but it is not limited to it. Higher temperatures extract more and tend to suit lighter, denser roasts that resist extraction, but in excess can bring bitterness and astringency. Lower temperatures extract less and suit darker roasts, which already extract easily and highlight acidity, but in excess can leave the cup watery or sour. Adjust for the roast level and taste.

What changes with a finer or coarser grind?

A finer grind increases contact surface and speeds up extraction, risking bitterness; a coarser grind slows extraction, risking sourness or weak body. Adjust the grind together with the brew time.
